Celebrating Eid in London

Eid al-Fitr, or Eid, is a major religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. A time of celebration, exchanging gifts, feasting on delicious food and treats and marking one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar. There are special Eid London celebrations, from Trafalgar Square’s annual festival to informal parties, particularly in Whitechapel, where both Muslims and non-Muslims congregate to join the fun.

What is Eid?

Eid is shortened from Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims across the globe take part in special prayers and events over two or three days. It’s also a time for goodwill and generosity, with many Muslims donating to and working with local charities.

There are two Eids, though. Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah and is the holier of the two Eids. When people say Eid, they are usually referring to Eid al-Fitr, as it’s more widely celebrated. You’ll also hear people wishing each other Eid Mubarak, which means Blessed celebration.

Eid in the Square

If you’re looking for an Eid party in London’s city centre, Eid in the Square is an annual Muslim festival in Trafalgar Square on the first Saturday after Eid al-Fitr, attracting tens of thousands of visitors in what has grown into one of London’s key cultural events. It’s a family-friendly occasion with a main stage hosting live music and performances, street food stalls offering delicious date treats and Halal dishes galore. There are also Mehndi and face painting stalls and kid-friendly workshops.
